IKEA's New Second-Hand Marketplace in Portugal

IKEA Portugal has launched “IKEA Preowned,” a new platform that lets people buy and sell second-hand IKEA furniture. The initiative supports the circular economy by promoting reuse, repair, and recycling to reduce waste and resource consumption.

What is “IKEA Preowned”?

IKEA Preowned is the new platform for used IKEA furniture that connects independent sellers and buyers,” explains the company. Through this platform, individuals can list furniture and home accessories with a photo, description, and a self-assigned price based on the item's condition.

Once a product is sold, the seller coordinates delivery with the buyer. Sellers can receive the full resale value via bank transfer, or get 115% of the item’s value if they opt to receive payment via an IKEA Gift Card — a clever incentive that promotes both recycling and loyalty to the IKEA brand.

Buyers also benefit, enjoying significantly lower prices on lightly used items. For example, a baby high chair that typically costs €24 new can be purchased second-hand for just €14.

Although IKEA currently isn’t charging any buyer protection fees, the website notes this is a limited-time offer. Normally, a 5% buyer protection fee applies to purchases on the platform.

Why Is This Important?

The launch of IKEA Preowned is more than just a commercial venture — it’s a crucial step towards combating the global waste crisis and addressing climate change.

1. Reducing Waste in Landfills

Furniture waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally. By giving used furniture a second life, IKEA is helping reduce the millions of tons of furniture that end up in landfills each year. This shift supports a longer lifecycle for products and reduces the demand for new raw materials.

2. Lower Carbon Footprint

Producing new furniture requires energy, water, and resources, and contributes to CO₂ emissions. Every piece of reused furniture means less manufacturing, transportation, and packaging, all of which help to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

3. Encouraging a Circular Economy

With “IKEA Preowned,” IKEA is making the circular economy accessible and practical for everyday consumers. The platform empowers individuals to participate in sustainable behavior with ease, aligning with broader EU goals for a greener economy.

4. Affordable Sustainability

By offering quality products at reduced prices, this initiative ensures that sustainability is not just a luxury. It makes climate-conscious choices affordable for families and individuals across Portugal.

Final Thoughts

IKEA’s new second-hand marketplace is a win-win for people and the planet. It not only gives customers a practical way to extend the life of their furniture, but it also sends a powerful message: sustainability can be stylish, simple, and accessible.

In a time when climate change demands urgent action from every sector, IKEA’s move shows how big businesses can lead by example — making eco-friendly choices the default, not the exception.

As consumers, this is our cue to rethink our habits. Buying second-hand isn’t just a budget-friendly choice — it’s a climate-friendly one.
