Penela launches a contest for the construction of 18 affordable homes in Coimbra.
The Penela municipality has launched a public tender to construct 18 affordable homes, with a base cost exceeding 2.8 million euros (excluding taxes). The project is set to be completed within 450 days on land belonging to the Union of Parishes of São Miguel, Santa Eufémia, and Rabaçal, in Coimbra's district, under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).
Eduardo Nogueira dos Santos highlighted, "Housing is a priority outlined in our electoral program." With this in mind, the municipality plans to build a total of 72 affordable homes under the RRP. As the mayor explained, "Housing is a key factor in the municipality's social and economic development, aiming to meet the needs of our population by supporting families, businesses, IPSS (Private Institutions of Social Solidarity), associations, and local commerce."
In addition, the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU) is assessing two further investments in this sector. It is "in the final stage" of signing agreements with the municipality, the Intermunicipal Community (CIM) of the Coimbra Region, and the IHRU. These agreements aim to build 25 homes in Espinhal, with a projected cost of 3,804,584.31 euros (plus VAT), and five homes in Penela, estimated at 702,956.22 euros (plus VAT).
In the meantime, the City Council has already signed agreements with the CIM and IHRU for the acquisition of an additional 12 houses in Penela and 12 houses in Cumeeira.
